Why You May Need A Root Canal

At Welcome Smile Dental, we perform root canal therapy to treat the nerve inside the tooth.  Unfortunately, teeth are unable to heal themselves, so root canal therapy can be performed to save teeth that are diseased, infected, fractured, or have become non-vital over time.  Performing a root canal thereby reduces the need for extracting the affected teeth.

Without Root Canal Therapy, the tooth or teeth in question may need to be extracted. Extracting a tooth to avoid Root Canal Treatment isn’t always an easy fix. The cost and time necessary to replace a missing tooth outweigh the related complications versus completing a Root Canal.

What are the Signs of an Infected or Compromised Tooth?

Surprisingly, sometimes there are no outward signs that the tooth is unhealthy. At some point, however, you may notice one (or more) of the following signs:

  • Any pressure to the tooth causes a sharp pain
  • Your tooth becomes much more sensitive to hot or cold. The sensation lingers even after the source is removed.
  • Your tooth begins to darken
  • You experience tenderness in your gums
  • You have tooth pain that interrupts your sleep
  • You experience spontaneous, throbbing tooth pain

Do I Need Have to Have A Root Canal?

When a tooth cannot be saved by root canal treatment, such as in the case where it is beyond repair, or if you choose not to proceed with a root canal on a particular tooth, the alternative is having the tooth extracted and replaced with an implant, bridge, or denture to restore chewing function and prevent neighboring teeth from shifting. Saving your natural teeth, whenever possible, is always recommended by our Dental Team!
